It’s not only important to eat your vegetables, it’s also important to show them off! Join us for the 3rd Annual Summer Harvest Competition on Saturday, August 12th at the nursery in Westbury. Enter your homegrown tomatoes, eggplant, squash, peppers and other vegetables for a chance to win bragging rights and a gift card from Hicks Nurseries.

The categories are:

Most Uncommon Tomato or Other Vegetable: Show us an heirloom or other variety we wouldn’t necessarily find at the supermarket.

Heaviest Zucchini & Heaviest Tomato: Bring us the big guys to be weighed.

Best Decorated Vegetable: We encourage you to use your imagination to its fullest! You can decorate one vegetable or a grouping of vegetables.

Beginner Gardener Category: Children are encouraged to bring in their favorite vegetable that they grew at home. All children will be awarded a certificate of participation.

Beautiful Bouquets: Create a bouquet of your favorite flowers and greenery from your very own garden. (Please display in your own vase)

Contestants may enter one item per category only. Each contestant may enter up to two categories. Attendees to the event will vote to determine the winner of the Best Decorated Vegetable. A panel of judges will determine the winners of all other categories.

Entries will be accepted beginning at 10 am on the day of the contest only and judging will begin promptly at 11am. Each contestant can win in only one category. Vegetables must be ripe with no signs of rot and not be frozen or previously frozen. Entries brought to the competition after 11 am may be exhibited but may not be eligible for prizes.
