Dead or Alive: Special Effects

Join us for an afternoon of exploring the science of creepy.
Participate in hands-on special effects activities and demos, meet pumpkin carvers, investigate spooky sounds and make your own vial of fake blood or a glowing eyeball!
Prizes for those who come in costume.

Maniac Pumpkin Carvers
Watch live pumpkin carving demonstrations. Learn tips and tricks for carving your own pumpkin at home with the Maniac Pumpkin Carvers.
Costume Creations
Join us in Maker Space for costume creation workshops using an array of tools and fun materials at your disposal.
Slime Bar
Stop by our Spooky Slime Bar and customize your own batch of gooey fun while learning the science of why polymers stick.
DIY Prosthetic Wounds
Construct your own prosthetic wounds (with a chocolate-y recipe that’s scary and delicious).
Fake Blood
Make and take your own vial of fake blood.
Dowels and Cobwebs
Build spooky sculptures you can stand inside with dowels and rubber bands.
Cardboard Haunted House
Turn the Design Lab Treehouse into a haunted house using cardboard and innovative engineering.
Spooky Sounds
Create instruments to make spooky sounds using everyday materials and electronics.
Glowing Eyeball
Make your own glowing eye with an LED and ping pong ball.
3:30 pm: Apple Pie Parfaits with Butter Beans Cafe
Learn how to make (and taste!) this delicious take on an “apple pie” parfait, with vanilla yogurt, New York apples, house-made granola, & seasonal spices.
5 pm: Apple Nachos with Butter Beans Cafe
Get ready to “dress up” local apples for a tasty treat. Participants will explore color, texture, portion sizes & food seasonality with this interactive family-friendly recipe demonstration.
