Character Breakdown (17-20 Actors):

The Royalty Athens/Fairy Kingdom

THESEUS/OBERON
Male. 40s. Any ethnicity. An actor with equal parts suave sophistication and bad-boy danger to play both THESEUS, Duke of Athens, authoritative, smart, sexy and a little undone by his love for Hippolyta. His usual buttoned-down and controlled demeanor is starting to unravel, and OBERON, King of the Fairies, demanding and powerful. He wants what he wants when he wants it.

HIPPOLYTA/TITANIA
Female. 40s. Any ethnicity. An actress with enormous charm, power, and wit. To play HIPPOLYTA, Theseus’ bride. She is complex, sexy, intuitive, and powerful. And TITANIA, the Queen of the Fairies. She is intense and moody and very much in control of her own desires and needs. Fiercely protective of her own.

The Royal Court of Athens

HERMIA
Female. 20s. Any ethnicity. Daughter of Egeus. Fun, sexy, energetic. Attractive, but in an offbeat way. Quick-witted and physically bold. She has a toughness under a sweet veneer. An impetuous young woman who is desperate to get out from under her father’s rule and start living her own life.

HELENA
Female. 20s. Any ethnicity. Hermia’s best friend and devoted to her. Fiery and sexy but a little odd too. A great comic role for a physically bold risk-taking actor. She is a slightly anxious young woman, who disguises her insecurities behind a razor-sharp wit.

LYSANDER
Male. 20s. Any ethnicity. In love with Hermia. Sexy, funny, a little self-absorbed but full of willful impulses, quick to act, stubborn, sweet. Must be funny, a physical comedian as well as great with language. A little rough-around-the-edges. A bad boy.

DEMETRIUS
Male. 20s. Any ethnicity. Also in love with Hermia. A bit smoother than Lysander, but also has a sexy cruel streak. Aggressive, witty, exciting. He’s used to getting his own way, a bit privileged. Also a physical comedian, dynamic. A spoiled but fabulous kid.
